How Does Hilary Hahn Pass Time Alone in a Hotel Room?

As a traveling violinist performing over 120 concerts around the world in one year, Hilary Hahn has to spend too much time in hotels. Like other traveling musicians, Miss Hahn is always asked "Don't you get bored spending so much time in hotels? How do you pass the time? Isn't it lonely?"

Although regarded as a world-class musician, she is just a little girl after all (one year elder than me) and often does some childish things. The list below (from her official website) illustrates the 20 ways she most frequently passes the time in a hotel room, in no particular order.

  1. Read
  2. Jump on and off the bed
  3. Cook (if one has a stove)
  4. Hand-wash laundry
  5. Iron
  6. Work (for a traveling violinist, this means everything from phone calls to string-changing, including website business, album-editing, season planning, and so much more)
  7. Write (anything)
  8. Watch TV (films; foreign broadcasts; animal rescue shows; sports such as gymnastics, ice skating and dancing, ballet, rowing, Aussie Rules football, and circus acts; music programs; or wacky American productions if one is American and homesick)
  9. Draw
  10. Do hand stands
  11. Dance
  12. Sleep
  13. Memorize anatomy charts (yes, I've done this recently!)
  14. Eat
  15. Take pictures out the window
  16. Exercise with rubber Therabands
  17. Recharge electronic devices
  18. Think up pranks
  19. Rearrange all the furniture (one of my favorites)
  20. Stare in the mirror
